Understanding the calculator

SIP Calculator: what it calculates.

A Systematic Investment Plan is a way to invest a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals. It is an investment method, not a separate asset class or a guarantee of returns. This calculator estimates how monthly contributions and an optional annual step-up could accumulate over time.

A SIP calculator combines your starting monthly contribution, annual step-up, investment period and assumed annual return to illustrate total contributions, estimated growth and future value. It is useful for scenario planning before you evaluate an actual scheme.

Methodology

How the calculation works.

M = P × (((1 + i)^n - 1) / i) × (1 + i)
  • M is the estimated maturity value.
  • P is the periodic contribution.
  • n is the number of contributions.
  • i = (1 + annual return)^(1/12) - 1 is the effective monthly return.
  • For step-up SIPs, each year's monthly contribution is increased and every payment is compounded separately.

Worked example. At ₹1,000 per month for 12 months with a 12% effective annual return and no step-up, the effective monthly rate is about 0.95%. Contributions made at the beginning of each month produce an illustrative value of approximately ₹12,766.

How to use it

  1. 1.Enter the monthly amount you can contribute consistently.
  2. 2.Set the annual percentage by which that contribution may increase; use 0% for a regular SIP.
  3. 3.Choose a tenure and test more than one return assumption.
  4. 4.Compare total contributions with estimated growth rather than looking only at the final value.

What it helps with

  • Compares regular and step-up SIP scenarios.
  • Shows how much you contribute versus estimated growth.
  • Updates instantly while inputs change.
  • Makes the return and timing assumptions visible.

What it does not include

  • Mutual fund returns are market-linked and not guaranteed.
  • Expense ratios, exit loads, taxes and transaction timing are not modelled.
  • A constant annual return simplifies real market volatility.
  • The calculator does not recommend a fund or assess suitability.

Common questions.

Are SIPs and mutual funds the same?

No. A mutual fund is an investment vehicle; SIP is a periodic contribution method.

What is a SIP Calculator?

It is an educational tool that applies the disclosed monthly compounding method to the assumptions you enter.

Are the results guaranteed?

No. Results are estimates, not forecasts, approvals, quotations or guarantees.

Why should I change the assumptions?

Testing conservative and optimistic inputs exposes uncertainty instead of hiding it behind one number.

Does it include tax and fees?

Only when a tax or fee is shown as an explicit input or result. Otherwise it is excluded.

How accurate is the calculator?

The mathematics follows the stated methodology, while real outcomes depend on rates, timing, rules, fees and circumstances.

Can I use this result as financial advice?

No. Use it for education and scenario comparison, then verify decisions with official documents or a qualified professional.

Why is inflation shown?

Inflation translates a future amount into approximate present-day purchasing power. The default 6% is editable and is not a forecast.

How often should I recalculate?

Recalculate when rates, income, contributions, rules, goals or repayment terms change.

Can the result differ from a bank or platform?

Yes. Institutions may use different compounding dates, rounding, charges and eligibility rules.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Calculations run locally in your browser and the input values are not sent to a calculation server.
